As with most of my works, the composition process for this piece began with improvisation, and one improvisation session in particular yielded the main theme for this piece, presented aggressively at the beginning of the work. Using techniques such as flurries of bariolage, trills, harmonics, and left-handed tapping, the original material is twisted and distorted to create an energetic work with a variety of characters. [ursprung] is my first work for unaccompanied cello, and pays tribute to the avant-garde composers, cellists, and improvisers that inspire me to perform and compose.
